  • A bright red statue of Russian President Vladimir Putin appeared in Central Park this week.

  • The children quickly adopted the installation by covering it with sand and pointing their water guns at it.

  • The statue was placed by a French artist to protest the war in Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin was spotted riding a small tank in New York’s Central Park this week and was quickly surrounded by children – or at least there was a statue of him.

According to the artist’s Instagram account, the statue of Putin was created by French artist James Colomina and placed on a playground inside a Manhattan park.

The bright red statue shows the Russian leader sitting on a miniature military tank in an almost childlike squat.

Alongside photographs of her work, Colomina says, “This statue aims to denounce the absurdity of war and to highlight the courage of children who face violent, disastrous situations triggered by others.”

The artist is known for his bright red sculptures, which often appear unannounced in public places. Additional photos show the same statues of Putin in Paris and Spain.

The Manhattan installation came about six months after Russia invaded Ukraine for no reason and as conflicts continued, especially in the eastern part of the country.

It is unclear whether the statues caught the attention of Putin, who went to great lengths to publicly perceive himself as strong and masculine: in the Russian leader’s famous photo shoot, he posed majestically outdoors, shirtless, on horseback.
